Game structure at a glance

Arc Raiders is a PvPvE extraction shooter released October 2025 by Embark Studios. Players launch from an underground base called Speranza onto the surface — the "Rust Belt" — to scavenge resources, fight AI enemies (ARCs), and extract alive. Each raid lasts 30 minutes. The map system is the core progression driver.

Design philosophy

P-01

Real-world grounding for believability

Each map is built on real-world location reference photography. The Spaceport was based on Tenerife. Dam Battlegrounds references real hydroelectric facilities. According to CEO Patrick Söderlund, the first "ugly but playable" prototype of a map like Dam takes weeks, with the real work being "making sure the map plays well."

Mobile adaptation tip

Ground each zone in a real-world archetype (jungle temple, flooded city, arctic facility) before adding fantasy elements. Recognizable spatial logic reduces learning curve for new players.

Size spectrum — not all maps should be equal

Design lead Virgil Watkins explicitly stated maps span "a spectrum of size to try to facilitate different types of gameplay." Stella Montis is the smallest zone (692 POI markers) while Spaceport has 1,650+ markers. Smaller maps create intense, high-stakes encounters. Larger maps support roaming strategies and varied playstyles.

Mobile adaptation tip

Design 2–3 map size tiers. Small = 3–5 min session, high intensity. Medium = 8–12 min, balanced. Large = 15+ min, exploration rewarded. Session length is the primary constraint on mobile.

Tension through uncertainty, not only difficulty

Watkins stated Arc Raiders "needs that element of tension and risk from other players to be good." Even in "safer lobbies," players shouldn't feel fully safe. The tension comes from not knowing whether another player will appear — not purely from enemy difficulty. Maps are designed so every decision carries risk.

Mobile adaptation tip

Even in PvE-only mobile games, simulate uncertainty: randomized patrol routes, dynamic spawns, time-pressure mechanics, loot that attracts aggressive NPCs when picked up.

Maps must unlock new gameplay, not just new spaces

Each new Arc Raiders map introduces mechanics unique to it: Blue Gate has puzzle-locked rooms, Spaceport has the Hidden Bunker button-hunt, Riven Tides rewards verticality and elevation control. Embark doesn't want to add maps "just to have new places to do the same old thing" — every map needs a mechanical identity.

Mobile adaptation tip

Every new zone should introduce at least one signature mechanic: a flood mechanic, a destructible terrain system, a day/night shift. The mechanic becomes the map's identity in player memory.

All 6 zones

Maps unlock progressively based on rounds played. Each zone has a distinct environment, difficulty band, and loot specialization. The unlock system prevents new players from hitting zones that would destroy their gear before they're ready. POI marker counts below are from third-party interactive-map sites (ArcMaps, Raidex) and are approximate — Embark does not publish official counts, and figures vary slightly between trackers.

Mountain pass with elevated terrain and an elaborate tunnel network. Natural chokepoints channel players through defined routes. Unlocks last of the original four (18 rounds); difficulty is rated inconsistently across guides — some call it beginner-friendly, others a higher-risk zone. Features puzzle mechanics (battery-placement, button sequences) that unlock bonus rooms.

Exodus shuttle launch infrastructure. First map with long sightlines across open launch pads — punishes cover-dependent players. Highest contested zone. Exclusive Hidden Bunker event extends timer to 40 min.

Coastal beaches, cliffs, flooded industrial zones. Rewards elevation control — high ground is strategic resource. Flooded areas create movement restrictions. Three distinct zones including new aerial ARC Turbine enemy type.

Zone anatomy — what every map has

All zones share a consistent structural skeleton. Understanding this skeleton is the core pattern for mobile adaptation.

  • Named POIs (Points of Interest) — distinct named areas within a zone with unique loot tables. Vary from low-risk (residential, open fields) to high-risk (industrial cores, boss arenas). Players learn to route between these.
  • Risk gradient from edge to center — outer ring of a map is always lower danger, center/depth zones increase ARC density, loot quality, and PvP likelihood. Players choose how deep to push.
  • Multiple extraction points with individual shutdown timers — as the 30-minute raid progresses, extraction points close one by one, compressing player movement into fewer exits. Creates natural endgame pressure.
  • Loot container variety — weapon cases, security lockers (need breach skill), raider caches (hidden, identified by ticking sound), field crates, duffel bags. Different containers require different skills/keys, rewarding investment.
  • Natural resource nodes — mushrooms, plants, minerals scattered across the map. Secondary crafting loop for non-combat progression.
  • A signature chokepoint structure — every map has 1–2 locations that funnel player traffic. These become PvP hotspots and high-contested areas. Aware players can exploit or avoid them.
  • ARC patrol routes (PvE density scaling) — enemy density is not uniform. Loot-dense POIs have heavier ARC presence. Perimeter areas are lighter. Informs risk/reward routing.

Zone progression flow

Arc Raiders uses a round-count unlock system rather than a level gate — maps open based on total rounds played, not character level. This ensures players have actual game experience before accessing more content. The final map, Stella Montis, was additionally gated behind a community unlock event when it launched in November 2025.

Unlock sequence (verified against official wiki)

0 rounds: Dam Battlegrounds (starter) → 6 rounds: Buried City → 12 rounds: Spaceport → 18 rounds: Blue Gate → 24 rounds: Stella Montis (gated behind a community unlock event at launch). Note: unlock order is by rounds played, and does not strictly track combat difficulty — Blue Gate plays as one of the easier zones yet unlocks last among the original four.

The progression still introduces mechanics gradually. Dam teaches basic extraction and ARC behavior. Buried City introduces verticality and maze navigation. Spaceport introduces open-terrain sightlines that punish corner-camping. Blue Gate adds keyed areas and puzzle mechanics. Stella Montis is the crucible — all mechanics in a compressed, lethal space. (The newer Riven Tides, added April 2026, sits outside this original sequence.)

Mobile adaptation pattern

Gate zones by a "mastery" metric (extraction success rate, not just time played). A player who has completed 8 runs isn't ready for mid-tier if they've never successfully extracted. Behavioral unlock is more meaningful than time-based unlock.

Loot distribution system

Loot in Arc Raiders is not random across the whole map — it follows a structured distribution logic based on zone, POI risk, container type, and active map condition.

Loot zone classification within maps

  • Red zones (high-value) — marked on interactive maps with red outlines. Increased container density, blueprint drop rates 16–18%. Also highest ARC density and PvP likelihood. Deliberate risk/reward tradeoff.
  • Yellow zones (moderate) — balanced risk/reward. Good for efficient routing between red zones. Reliable crafting materials.
  • Unmarked areas (baseline) — quick material gathering, minimal combat. Used for looping routes around danger zones.
  • Night time loot bonus — epic and legendary loot rates increase during Night Raid events. Specific containers (e.g. Piazza Roma security lockers) have 16–18% blueprint drop rates during night. Some containers have higher spawn rates at night specifically.
Key pattern: loot density ≠ loot value

High-density zones have many containers but not necessarily the best loot. The best loot is in locked, hidden, or skill-gated containers in high-risk zones. This creates a choice: efficient farming vs high-risk hunting for rares.

Extraction types

The extraction system is the primary tension mechanism. All extractions are public knowledge on the map, creating a predictable pressure point that other players can exploit.

Core extraction design insight

Every public extraction broadcasts position and creates a vulnerability window. The 90-second wait is deliberately long enough to feel exposed. The Raider Hatch exists as a premium option for players who want to skip this vulnerability — but it costs a single-use key that must survive death in a Safe Pocket slot. This creates a meaningful meta-cost trade-off.

  • Extraction camping is a documented meta-threat. The recommended counter is scouting for 30–60 seconds before activating, listening for footsteps/flares, and switching to a different extraction if the area is hot.
  • Overtime mechanic — calling a cargo elevator at the very last second of the raid timer grants an overtime window, giving extra time to reach the elevator. Skilled players exploit this for maximum looting time.
  • Point consolidation pressure — as extractions close throughout the raid, fewer options exist toward the end. Players consolidate toward remaining open points, increasing encounter density in the final minutes.
  • Squad revival — downed teammates auto-revive on successful extraction, incentivizing at least one squad member to extract even if others die.

Map conditions (dynamic events)

Map conditions are rotating hourly modifiers applied to specific zones. Each map has a set of compatible conditions; some are map-exclusive. Conditions run on a fixed schedule viewable on the official site. The count has grown steadily as Embark adds more — roughly 14–15 condition types are in rotation as of mid-2026, split into Minor and Major categories. The table below is representative, not exhaustive (Embark regularly adds and retires conditions).

Condition design insight

Conditions serve two functions: (1) replayability — the same map plays differently depending on active condition, so players return to familiar zones with new goals; (2) cadence gating — the hourly schedule creates appointment gaming without forcing players online at specific times. Players plan around the schedule, increasing return visits.

Core design patterns for mobile adaptation

M-01

Progressive zone unlock via demonstrated competency

Arc Raiders gates zones by rounds played. For mobile, adapt this to competency signals: did the player successfully extract (not just play) a certain number of times? Can they demonstrate they understand the core loop before accessing harder content?

Mobile rule: Unlock next zone tier when player achieves N successful extractions from previous tier, not N total raids.

M-02

Each zone must teach one new spatial skill

Each zone in Arc Raiders carries a distinct spatial skill: corridor navigation + ARC timing (Dam), maze routing + vertical ambush (Buried City), open terrain + sightlines (Spaceport), chokepoint control + keys (Blue Gate), compressed pressure (Stella Montis). The principle holds even though unlock order doesn't strictly equal difficulty order.

Mobile rule: Design each zone as a "school" for one mechanic. Don't stack multiple new mechanics into one zone release. If your unlock gate and difficulty curve diverge (as they do here), make the divergence intentional and communicate it to players.

Loot-risk correlation with geographic depth

Best loot is always deeper into the zone, further from spawn, behind more obstacles. The spatial metaphor of "going deeper = more reward + more risk" is universal and intuitive. ARC density scales to zone depth, not uniformly distributed.

Mobile rule: Use depth-from-spawn as the primary loot quality axis. Invert risk for extraction: best loot is farthest from exit, so you must decide whether to push and lose time, or extract early with safe but limited loot.

M-04

Extraction as a deliberate tension climax

The extraction phase is engineered to be the most dangerous part of every run. Loud activations, countdown timers, and consolidating player movement all converge on a single point. This is not a flaw — it's the designed climax of every session.

Mobile rule: Give extractions (or equivalent "escape" mechanics) a 60–90 second countdown, a visible broadcast to other players/enemies, and at least 2–3 different exit types with different noise/speed trade-offs. The choice of exit is a skill expression.

M-05

Map-exclusive events create appointment behavior

Conditions like Hidden Bunker (Spaceport only), Locked Gate (Blue Gate only), and Bird City (Buried City only) make specific maps worth returning to at specific times. Players check the event schedule, plan sessions around it, and return to maps they'd otherwise ignore.

Mobile rule: Every zone should have at least one exclusive condition that runs on a predictable schedule. The exclusivity makes it worth tracking and creates "appointment gaming" without a daily quest structure.

M-06

Loot containers require skills/keys — not just presence

Security lockers require a breach skill. Raider caches require identifying a ticking sound. Hidden bunkers require finding 4 buttons. Raider Hatches require a key. The best loot in Arc Raiders is not guarded only by combat — it's gated by knowledge and preparation.

Mobile rule: Design 2–3 tiers of container access: free (anyone can open), skill-gated (requires unlock), and key-gated (requires consumable). The skill/key gating preserves reward differentiation between veteran and new players without making loot purely combat-dependent.

M-07

Endgame zones invert size — smallest = hardest

Stella Montis is Arc Raiders' hardest and smallest map. Compressed space eliminates the ability to disengage and reset — every encounter matters more. This is a deliberate design inversion: players might expect the endgame to be a vast open zone. Instead it's a claustrophobic arena.

Mobile rule: Consider making the endgame zone your smallest. Experienced players can handle reduced space. The density of encounters per square meter should increase with progression tier, not the raw scale of the map.

How Arc Raiders sustains tension

  • The cargo elevator alarm — activating extraction broadcasts your position to the entire zone. You cannot extract quietly unless you pay for a Raider Hatch key. This single design decision makes the final 90 seconds of every run a meaningful encounter.
  • Shutdown timers on extraction points — as the raid progresses, exits close permanently. This creates escalating urgency without an artificial clock countdown. Players must keep mental track of which exits remain viable.
  • Equipment loss on death — all carried gear (except items in the Safe Pocket slot) is lost on death. This makes every combat encounter a real risk, not just a respawn. The Safe Pocket creates one guaranteed preservation slot, which players use strategically (Raider Hatch keys, best blueprint found).
  • Aggression-based matchmaking — players are loosely matched by historical aggression, but never fully separated. The goal is that even peaceful players feel the potential threat of aggressive players nearby. Certainty of safety kills tension.
  • Map conditions that disable safety nets — Electromagnetic Storm disables Raider Hatches (the silent escape option). This forces players into loud extractions during the exact conditions where ARC density is highest.
  • Loot compression toward endgame — as extraction points close, remaining players are pushed toward fewer zones, increasing encounter likelihood. The zone naturally gets more dangerous over time without any artificial spawn increase.

Mobile adaptation framework

Translating Arc Raiders' map design to a casual mobile game requires preserving the structural patterns while adapting for shorter sessions, touch controls, and casual retention loops.

The most portable pattern

The single most transferable Arc Raiders map design principle: extraction is a vulnerability, not a safe button. The moment players feel safe once they find an exit, the tension architecture collapses. Design extraction so it is the riskiest 30–90 seconds of the entire run. Everything else is secondary to this.
